Theosophy posits Maitreya as a spiritual entity guiding human evolution, believed by some to manifest as the World Teacher.

Theosophy describes Maitreya as an advanced spiritual being, a high-ranking member of a hidden spiritual hierarchy known as the Masters of the Ancient Wisdom. This hierarchy is believed to oversee humanity's evolution, with Maitreya holding the role of World Teacher. His purpose is to transmit knowledge about existence to aid humanity's progress. Theosophical doctrine suggests Maitreya occasionally incarnates physically to fulfill this role. In the early 20th century, some Theosophists, notably Annie Besant and Charles Leadbeater, anticipated Maitreya's imminent physical manifestation, identifying Jiddu Krishnamurti as a potential 'vehicle'. This led to the World Teacher Project and the Order of the Star in the East, which generated significant interest but also caused divisions within the Theosophical Society. Krishnamurti eventually rejected this role and the Theosophical movement in 1929, leading to disappointment and a more subdued public stance on the matter by major Theosophical organizations.

The concept of Maitreya first appeared in Theosophical literature in Alfred Percy Sinnett's 1883 work 'Esoteric Buddhism' and was significantly expanded by Helena Blavatsky in 'The Secret Doctrine'. Blavatsky linked Maitreya to Buddhist and Hindu traditions and proposed multiple messianic instances throughout history. The spiritual hierarchy, of which Maitreya is a part, is seen as guiding Earth's evolution through occult and spiritual means. Maitreya's position is described as the Boddhisatva, second only to Sanat Kumara and the Buddha in the current hierarchy. Theosophists believe certain members of this hierarchy, the Masters, guided the formation of the Theosophical Society itself, aiming to facilitate humanity's evolution through periodic 'impulses' of knowledge.

The Concept of Maitreya in Theosophy

Within Theosophical doctrine, Maitreya is understood as a highly evolved spiritual entity, a significant figure within a concealed spiritual council known as the Masters of the Ancient Wisdom. This council's primary function is to guide the developmental trajectory of humankind. Maitreya is specifically designated as the 'World Teacher,' tasked with imparting essential knowledge concerning the true nature of reality and existence. This transmission of wisdom is intended to assist humanity in its evolutionary journey, which Theosophy views as cyclical yet progressive. To facilitate this knowledge transfer, Maitreya is believed to manifest or incarnate into the physical world periodically, assuming the role of the World Teacher for humanity.

Development and Manifestation Theories

The concept of Maitreya was introduced into Theosophical discourse by Alfred Percy Sinnett in his 1883 book 'Esoteric Buddhism' and was later significantly elaborated upon by Helena Blavatsky, a co-founder of the Theosophical Society, in her monumental work 'The Secret Doctrine'. Blavatsky connected the messianic figure of Maitreya to both Buddhist and Hindu religious traditions and suggested that such messianic appearances have occurred and will continue to occur throughout human history. Theosophical texts further detail Maitreya's place within a spiritual hierarchy, positioned as the Boddhisatva, subordinate only to Sanat Kumara and the Buddha in the present evolutionary cycle. This hierarchy is depicted as guiding humanity's spiritual and occult development.

The World Teacher Project and its Aftermath

In the early 20th century, prominent Theosophists Annie Besant and Charles Leadbeater became convinced that Maitreya's reappearance as the World Teacher was imminent. They identified Jiddu Krishnamurti as a suitable physical 'vehicle' for this manifestation, establishing the Order of the Star in the East to support him. This initiative garnered considerable global attention but also provoked significant internal conflict and schisms within the Theosophical Society. The movement faced opposition, and its trajectory was dramatically altered in 1929 when Krishnamurti publicly renounced the role and dissolved the Order, severing his ties with Theosophy. This event reportedly led to disappointment among proponents and a more reserved public discussion of Maitreya's imminent return within major Theosophical organizations.

Later Interpretations and Influence

Following the events surrounding Jiddu Krishnamurti, major Theosophical organizations became less vocal about Maitreya's immediate reappearance. However, the core concepts of a spiritual hierarchy, hidden masters, and the World Teacher continued to resonate, finding new expressions in various New Age and esoteric movements. Alice Bailey, after leaving the Theosophical Society, expanded upon these ideas, referring to Maitreya as the 'Cosmic Christ' and predicting a future manifestation. The concept of Maitreya also became central to the Ascended Master Teachings and was promoted by figures like Benjamin Creme, who founded Share International, though some of his predictions based on alleged telepathic messages did not materialize.
