Upasruti

From Sanskrit "upāśruti," meaning "hearing near" or "attentive hearing." It combines "upa-" (near, towards) and "śruti" (hearing, Vedic scripture). The term implies a listening that transcends ordinary perception, often associated with divine or hidden knowledge.

According to the explanation of Occultism, the voice of any person at a distance — generally one versed in the mysteries of esoteric teachings or an adept — endowed with the gift of projecting both his voice and astral image to any person whatsoever, regardless of distance. The upasruti may "reveal the secrets of the future", or may only inform the person it addresses of some prosaic fact of the present ; yet it will still be an upasruti — the "double" or the echo of the voice of a living man or woman.

Blavatsky's definition of upasruti, though framed through the lens of "occultism" and "adepts," points to a phenomenon deeply rooted in the contemplative traditions of Hinduism. It speaks to the ancient human fascination with the possibility of direct, telepathic communion, a kind of spiritual eavesdropping across the veil of ordinary space and time. Mircea Eliade, in his exploration of shamanism and archaic techniques of ecstasy, often discusses similar experiences of disembodied voices or transmissions of knowledge that bypass the usual sensory apparatus. It suggests that consciousness, when sufficiently refined or empowered, can project itself, carrying not just an image but also a voice, to another point of awareness. This is not so different from the modern understanding of quantum entanglement, where particles can influence each other instantaneously regardless of distance, albeit applied here to the realm of consciousness. The "secrets of the future" revealed by an upasruti are not necessarily grand prophecies, but often intimate insights or warnings, much like a whispered message from a loved one across a crowded room, or a sudden intuition that proves uncannily accurate. It’s a reminder that the universe of perception may be far vaster and more interconnected than our everyday senses allow us to apprehend. The practice, if one can call it that, is not about forcing such experiences, but about cultivating a receptive stillness, a deep listening that can attune the inner ear to these subtle echoes of existence.
