Pitris

Sanskrit Concept Hindu

The Pitris are ancestral spirits or progenitor beings in Hindu cosmology, often associated with the moon and considered creators of humanity's earlier races. They are categorized into corporeal and incorporeal classes, playing a role in the evolution and sustenance of life.

Where the word comes from

The term "Pitris" derives from the Sanskrit word "pitṛ," meaning "father" or "ancestor." This root is cognate with Proto-Indo-European *ph₂tḗr, appearing in numerous Indo-European languages. In Hindu texts, the concept of Pitris as ancestral beings dates back to the Vedic period.

In depth

The ancestors, or creators of mankind. They are of seven classes, three of which are incorporeal, arupa, and four corporeal. In popular theology they are said to be created from Brahma's side. They are variously genealogized, but in esoteric philosophy they are as given in the Secret Doctrine. In Isis Unveiled it is said of them: "It is generally believed that the Hindu term means the spirits of our ancestors, of disembodied people, hence the argument of some Spiritualists that fakirs (and yogis) and other Eastern wonder-workers, are mediums. This is in more than one sense erroneous. The Pitris are not the ancestors of the present living men, but those of the human kind, or Adamic races; the spirits of human races, which on the great scale of descending evolution preceded our races of men, and they were physicedly, eis well as spiritually, far superior to our modern pigmies. In Mdnava Dharma Shdstra thej' are called the Lunar Ancestors." The Secret Doctrine has now explained that which was cautiously put forward in the earlier Theosophical volumes.

How different paths see it

Hindu
The Pitris are central to Vedic and Puranic cosmologies, venerated through śrāddha rituals, offerings meant to sustain them and ensure their blessings for the living lineage. They are seen as intermediaries between the divine and human realms, embodying ancestral wisdom and lineage continuity.

What it means today

Helena Blavatsky's definition of the Pitris offers a fascinating lens through which to view the Hindu concept of ancestral veneration, moving beyond the simplistic interpretation of mere departed relatives. She posits them as "creators of mankind" and "spirits of human races" that preceded our own, a notion that resonates with the cyclical and evolutionary cosmology central to Indic thought. This idea of ancestral beings as architects of humanity's past evolutionary stages echoes Mircea Eliade's exploration of the sacred past and the power of archaic models. The Pitris, in this esoteric interpretation, are not just figures in a genealogical tree but potent forces in the grand unfolding of cosmic and human evolution.

Blavatsky's distinction between personal ancestors and these cosmic progenitors is crucial. While everyday Hindu practice involves śrāddha rituals to honor one's immediate deceased family members, the esoteric Pitris represent a deeper layer of existence, a lineage of beings who shaped the very potential for human form and consciousness. This aligns with the concept of the "lunar ancestors" mentioned, suggesting a connection to the subtle, cyclical energies of the moon, often associated with the mind and the ebb and flow of cosmic processes. The idea of "incorpoeal" and "corporeal" classes further suggests a spectrum of existence, from pure consciousness to more manifest forms, a common theme in esoteric philosophies.

Understanding the Pitris in this broader context invites contemplation on our place within a vast, interconnected web of being. They serve as a reminder that our present existence is not an isolated event but a culmination of countless prior evolutionary steps and the influence of beings who, in their own time, were far more advanced. This perspective encourages a reverence not just for personal lineage but for the very principle of ancestry as a generative force in the cosmos. It shifts the focus from personal memory to a cosmic memory, a deep wellspring of existence from which we draw our being. The contemplation of such beings, whether through ritual or philosophical inquiry, can foster a profound sense of belonging and a recognition of the immense, unfolding drama of consciousness.
