Magnetic Masonry

Concept

Magnetic Masonry, also known as Latric Masonry, refers to a historical esoteric concept of a brotherhood dedicated to healing. It is associated with "Brothers of Light" and draws parallels to ancient Greek healing traditions, particularly the practices found in Asclepian temples.

Where the word comes from

The term "Magnetic Masonry" is not of ancient origin but appears in 19th-century esoteric literature. "Latric" is derived from the Greek "iatrikē" (ἰατρική), meaning "the art of healing." This connects the concept to the ancient Greek practice of medicine and healing.

In depth

Also called "latric" masonry. It is described as a Brotherhood of Healers (from iatrike a Greek word meaning "the art of healing"), and is greatly used by the "Brothers of Light" as Kenneth Mackenzie states in the Royal Masonic Cyclopedia. There appears to be a tradition in some secret Masonic works — so says Ragon at any rate, the great IMasonic authority — to the effect that there was a Masonic degree called the Oracle of Cos, "instituted in the eighteenth century B.C., from the fact that Cos was the birthplace of Hippocrates". Tlie iatrike was a distijict characteristic of the priests who took charge of the patients in the ancient Asclcpia, the temples where the god Asclepios (^sculapius) was said to heal the sick and the lame.

How different paths see it

Hermetic
The Hermetic tradition emphasizes the interconnectedness of all things and the power of sympathetic magic, aligning with the idea of a healing brotherhood using subtle, magnetic forces.
Hindu
Concepts of divine healers and yogic practices aimed at purifying the body and mind resonate with the idea of a structured order dedicated to restoring health through esoteric means.
Christian Mystic
The tradition of saints and miraculous healings, often involving touch or prayer, shares a thematic link with the concept of a brotherhood actively engaged in the art of healing through specialized knowledge.
Modern Non-dual
Modern non-dual philosophies often explore the mind-body connection and the potential for consciousness to influence physical well-being, echoing the underlying principles of subtle energy and healing.

What it means today

The concept of Magnetic Masonry, as presented in Blavatsky's lexicon, offers a fascinating glimpse into the historical imagination of esoteric orders, particularly their attempts to synthesize ancient healing practices with Masonic symbolism. The connection drawn to the Greek "iatrikē" and the Asclepian temples is particularly potent. These temples, as Mircea Eliade noted in his studies of shamanism and archaic techniques of ecstasy, were not simply hospitals but sacred sites where the divine was invoked for restoration. The priests who tended to the sick were practitioners of a holistic medicine, integrating ritual, diet, and what we might now term psychosomatic therapies.

The notion of a "Brotherhood of Healers" implies a structured, disciplined approach to these subtle arts, suggesting that the ability to channel healing energies, or to engage in "magnetic" influence, was not an innate gift bestowed randomly, but a skill cultivated through initiation and communal practice. This echoes the alchemical pursuit of perfection, where the transformation of base metals into gold mirrors the potential for human spiritual and physical refinement. Kenneth Mackenzie, cited by Blavatsky, points to "Brothers of Light," a designation that evokes a spiritual hierarchy and a transmission of knowledge akin to the Gnostic traditions or the Sufi concept of the saints (awliya) who act as conduits for divine grace.

The idea of "Latric" Masonry, in its emphasis on healing, diverges from the more commonly known operative or speculative aspects of Freemasonry, pointing towards a specialized branch concerned with the restoration of vital forces. It suggests a lineage of esoteric knowledge that predates modern medical science, one that understood the body as an energetic field susceptible to influence. This resonates with Carl Jung's exploration of archetypes and the collective unconscious, where symbols of healing and wholeness persist across cultures and epochs. The "Oracle of Cos" and its association with Hippocrates, the father of Western medicine, further anchors this concept in a historical continuum, albeit one filtered through an esoteric lens that seeks to recover a more profound, perhaps magical, understanding of health. In this view, illness is not merely a malfunction of organic parts, but a disharmony in the subtle energetic matrix of the individual, a disharmony that a dedicated brotherhood, through specific techniques and spiritual attunement, could seek to rectify.
