Karana Sarira

Derived from Sanskrit, "Karana" means "cause" or "instrument," and "Sharira" translates to "body." The term refers to the body that acts as the cause of transmigration, carrying the accumulated karma, or "karmaphal," the fruits of actions, from one existence to the next.

The "Causal body". It is dual in it^ meaning. Exoterieally, it is Avidjfa, ignorance, or that which is the cause of the evolution of a human ego and its reincarnation ; hence the lower Manas esoterically — the causal body or Knrnnopmlhi stands in the Taraka Rajayoga as corresponding to Buddhi and the Higher "Manas", or Spiritual Soul.

In the intricate architecture of the subtle bodies described in Hindu traditions, the Karana Sharira, or causal body, occupies a position of profound significance. It is the root from which the more manifest sheaths—the physical, energetic, mental, and intellectual bodies—emanate, and the repository of the seeds of future experience. Blavatsky, in her characteristic synthesis, points to its dual meaning: exoterically, it is the ignorance, Avidya, that binds us to the wheel of samsara, the relentless cycle of birth and death. Esoterically, however, it represents the higher principles, the spiritual intellect (Buddhi) and the higher mind (Manas), that contain the karmic potential. This is not a passive storage but an active force, a subtle organism that carries the imprints, the samskaras, of all our past actions, desires, and thoughts.

Mircea Eliade, in his studies of comparative religion, often highlighted the cyclical nature of time and existence in many spiritual traditions, a concept deeply embedded in the understanding of the Karana Sharira. It is the continuity that allows for personal evolution across lifetimes, a cosmic ledger that ensures no action is truly lost. Carl Jung’s concept of the collective unconscious, while distinct, resonates with the idea of inherited predispositions and archetypal patterns that can influence individual destiny, much like the karmic imprints carried by the Karana Sharira. The practice associated with understanding the Karana Sharira often involves introspection, meditation, and ethical living, aiming to purify these latent tendencies and ultimately transcend the cycle of rebirth. It is the subtle body that connects the ephemeral present to the vast expanse of past and future, a constant reminder that our current reality is a consequence of causal chains stretching back through uncounted lives. The challenge lies in recognizing this causal influence without succumbing to fatalism, but rather by consciously shaping the future through present awareness and action.
