Cleromancy
Cleromancy is a method of divination that uses chance, like casting lots or dice, to reveal divine will or determine outcomes. It's an ancient practice found across cultures, where seemingly random events are interpreted as meaningful guidance from a higher power.
Where the word comes from
The term "cleromancy" derives from the Greek words "klēros" (lot) and "manteia" (divination). Its roots lie in the ancient practice of using marked stones, bones, or other objects thrown to predict the future or make decisions, a method predating written records and found in various early civilizations.
In depth
Cleromancy is a form of divination, involving sortition (casting of lots), in which an outcome is determined by means that normally would be considered random, such as the rolling of dice (astragalomancy), but that are sometimes believed to reveal the will of a deity.
How different paths see it
What it means today
The practice of cleromancy, the divination by lot, speaks to a deep-seated human impulse to discern pattern and purpose within the flux of existence. Mircea Eliade, in his seminal works on the history of religions, highlighted how ancient societies sought to escape the terror of the arbitrary by positing a cosmic order, a divine intelligence that governed even the seemingly random. Cleromancy is one manifestation of this desire, a way to consult the heavens, or the gods, through the simple act of throwing dice or drawing straws. It is an ancient technology of meaning-making, where the fall of the dice is not merely chance but a coded message.
In the Hermetic tradition, this resonates with the principle of correspondence, where the macrocosm is reflected in the microcosm. The casting of lots can be seen as a way to align oneself with these cosmic currents, to receive a direct, unfiltered communication from the divine or the universe itself. It bypasses the intellect, appealing directly to intuition and faith. This is not unlike the contemplative practices in Christian mysticism, where the quietude of the soul allows for divine whispers, or the Sufi emphasis on tawakkul, surrender to God's will, where events are accepted as divinely ordained.
Carl Jung might view cleromancy as a manifestation of synchronicity, meaningful coincidences that suggest an acausal connecting principle. The casting of lots, in this light, is not about predicting the future but about revealing the present state of the psyche and its relationship to the unfolding universe. The "random" outcome is, in fact, an expression of the collective unconscious or the individual’s own unconscious dynamics, made visible through a tangible, chance-driven event. It is a way to externalize internal states, to give form to the formless. The practice, therefore, is less about foretelling specific events and more about understanding the forces at play, both within and without.
