Apport (paranormal)

The term "apport" derives from the French verb "apporter," meaning "to bring" or "to carry." It emerged in the lexicon of Spiritualism and parapsychology in the 19th century to describe the purported materialization of objects during séances, suggesting a direct, unmediated conveyance.

In parapsychology and Spiritualism, an apport is the alleged paranormal transference of an article from one place to another, or an appearance of an article from an unknown source that is often associated with poltergeist activity or séances. Apports reported during séances have been found to be the result of deliberate fraud. No medium or psychic has demonstrated the manifestation of an apport under scientifically controlled conditions.

The concept of apport, as presented within the spiritualist milieu of the 19th century, offers a curious lens through which to examine our enduring fascination with the tangible manifestation of the intangible. It speaks to a deep-seated human yearning for direct evidence of realms beyond our immediate perception, a desire to touch the ethereal. Mircea Eliade, in his exploration of the sacred and the profane, often noted how archaic societies sought to collapse the distance between the divine and the everyday through ritual and miraculous occurrences. Apport, in its own way, attempts to perform this very collapse, presenting an object as a concrete token of an otherwise invisible agency, be it a spirit or a potent psychic force.

Yet, as Blavatsky's definition acknowledges, the shadow of fraud has perpetually loomed, a testament to the seductive power of illusion and the ease with which human credulity can be exploited. The alchemists, for instance, sought the transmutation of base metals into gold, a form of material transformation, but also faced accusations of charlatanry when their promises remained unfulfilled.

From a psychological perspective, the phenomenon of apport can be understood, as Carl Jung might suggest, as an externalization of the collective unconscious or a projection of repressed desires. The appearance of a desired object, or an object imbued with symbolic meaning, could represent a subconscious fulfillment, a materialization of inner states. The very act of “bringing” something from nowhere speaks to a primal creative impulse, a desire to manifest form from the void. While the empirical evidence for apport remains decidedly thin, its persistence in the popular imagination underscores a fundamental aspect of the human condition: our ongoing quest for meaning and connection to forces larger than ourselves, a quest that often seeks tangible anchors in an often formless universe. The question then becomes not merely whether such phenomena occur, but what this persistent belief reveals about our deepest hopes and anxieties.
