W. Wynn Westcott was a British coroner, magician, theosophist, and Freemason who co-founded the Golden Dawn.

William Wynn Westcott was a British individual born in 1848 who pursued multiple intellectual and organizational paths, including medicine, law, Freemasonry, and esoteric societies. He qualified as a doctor of medicine and later served as a coroner. His involvement in Freemasonry began in 1871, and he rose to leadership positions within lodges. Westcott's interest in the Kabbalah led him to join the Societas Rosicruciana in Anglia (SRIA), eventually becoming its chief. In 1887, he co-founded the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn alongside Samuel Liddell Mathers and William Robert Woodman. He was also active in the Theosophical Society, establishing a London lodge. Due to professional pressures related to his role as a coroner, Westcott withdrew from public association with the Golden Dawn in 1896 but continued his leadership in the SRIA and later participated in the Stella Matutina, a Golden Dawn splinter group. He retired from his coroner position after 1910, moved to South Africa in 1918, and passed away in Durban in 1925.

Esoteric and Occult Leadership

W. Wynn Westcott played a significant role in the development of prominent esoteric organizations in the late 19th century. He was a key figure in the Societas Rosicruciana in Anglia (SRIA), assuming leadership as its Supreme Magus. His most notable contribution was co-founding the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn in 1887 with Samuel Liddell Mathers and William Robert Woodman. This order became influential in the revival of Western ceremonial magic. Westcott also engaged with the Theosophical Society, founding its Adelphi Lodge in London. His involvement in these groups demonstrates a deep commitment to the study and practice of occult and mystical traditions.

Career and Public Life

Beyond his esoteric pursuits, William Wynn Westcott had a distinguished public career. He was a qualified doctor of medicine and served as a coroner for the Crown. This professional role eventually created a conflict with his public involvement in the Golden Dawn, leading him to step back from the organization in 1896 due to concerns about how his association might be perceived. He continued to hold leadership positions in the SRIA. Westcott retired from his coroner duties sometime after 1910 and later relocated to South Africa, where he lived until his death.
