The Tao is the ultimate reality. On the surface, this statement declares that the Tao, the fundamental principle of the universe in Taoist philosophy, is the highest form of existence. It is the ground of all being, the origin from which everything arises and to which everything returns.

Esoterically, Lao Tzu, in the *Tao Te Ching*, describes the Tao as ineffable and beyond conceptualization. It is not a deity or a personal god, but the primordial, unmanifest potentiality that underlies all manifest reality. The Tao is the Way, the natural order of things, the spontaneous flow of existence. It is the source of Yin and Yang, the mother of the ten thousand things.
